The Age of Giffing It

Just when you thought the ancient GIF animation format is passe, or cheesy at best, someone hands you a surprise around the next corner.

Such is Micael Reynaud’s simple yet creative collection of animated GIFs. By the way, GIF is merely a file extension which ever since 1987 stands for Graphics Interchange Format. Back in those day GIFs were quite minimalistic. It is only in the recent years, probably due to the increased performance improvement in most surfers’ internet connections, that animated images of several Megabytes in file size have become acceptable for general viewing. Such are these GIF animations of Micael Reynaud as well.

Ancient Calligraphy

Persian calligraphyIn the West calligraphy is traditionally considered penmanship, however in Islamic countries it is an art. Persian (ancient Iranian) calligraphers are among the most sought out practitioners of this ancient form of art.

Most of us are familiar with the famous quote “The pen is mightier than the sword”, coined by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, but an ancient Persian proverb of a similar meaning precedes it:

Pencil Sculptures

Dalton GhettiOscar Wilde said “A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament.” So what can be said about the unique temperament of Mr. Dalton Ghetti?

Perhaps that he is patient? That would be an understatement. Dalton Ghetti creates art out of pencil tips and creating a single sculpture can take years.

Sculpting pencil tips His eyesight must be beyond superb, as Ghetti has been carving pencil tips – without the help of a magnifying glass – for over 25 years.

It’s not what he does full time though. It’s a hobby. This unique hobby would prove Dave Berry, an American writer and humorist, wrong, who said that “hobbies of any kind are boring except to people who have the same hobby.”

There is nothing boring about Dalton Ghetti’s pencil sculptures. They are unique works of art, and testaments of the human ability to surpass expectations.

The Measure of Art

What is art?

Ancient cave artIf art has always been a part of human life, then the question “what is art” should (logically speaking) be almost as old as time itself. However, an additional couple of seconds contemplating this thought must bring us to the conclusion that cave people, for example, didn’t delve on whether their artistic expressions were “art” or not.

So when did art become something to argue over and why?
